I was deeply moved by the determination of a 16-year-old girl, Trisha (name changed), who, at such a young age, had already grasped the harsh realities of life. During our counseling sessions, Trisha expressed a clear and resolute goal—she needed to start earning as soon as possible to fund her own education.

Despite having a supportive family, financial constraints made higher education seem like a distant dream. The urgency in her voice was unmistakable—if she didn’t secure an income soon, her family might arrange her marriage, effectively cutting short her aspirations. For families struggling to cover even basic daily expenses, investing in a girl’s education often takes a backseat.
When presented with options and guidance, Trisha was overwhelmed with gratitude. For the first time, she saw a path forward—a chance to shape her own future rather than be shaped by circumstances.
 
The Challenge: Barriers to Education and Employment

The statistics paint a stark picture:

• Education: According to a 2021 UNESCO report, only 74% of girls in India complete primary education, and the number drops to 42% for secondary education.
• Early Marriage: UNICEF reports that 27% of Indian girls are married before the age of 18, severely limiting their opportunities for education and independence.
• Employment: The International Labour Organization (ILO) states that women’s labor force participation in India is only 20.3%, among the lowest in the world.
These challenges are deeply interconnected. Without education, employment opportunities remain scarce. Without financial independence, early marriage becomes a likely outcome.

In many communities, early marriage is still seen as a practical solution to financial struggles. Yet, this practice robs young girls of opportunities for education, personal development, and self-reliance.

• Building Trust and Awareness: Encouraging critical thinking about the future helps girls see possibilities beyond traditional expectations.
